Discovering Your Story

Saturday, Sept. 09, 2pm PST/5pm EST

Join our Breckenridge Retreat mentor Peter Blauner in story discussion with novelist Dan Greenberger as they work on Dan’s sequel to his first novel.

Registrants will receive a Zoom link prior to the class.

  • How do you fish your story out of the ocean of the ideas and then figure out whether to make a meal out of it or throw it back? This hour will be devoted to talking about how to find your story, how to determine the best way to tell it, and what to do with it once you're done. The goal – for both beginners and experienced writers coming from other fields - is to discover what characters, plot, format, and daily work habits will be most effective for getting your project across the finish line.

Dan Greenberger is a three-time winner of Writers Guild awards with many years of experience writing television shows, films, and on-air promotion. Lately, he’s turned his hand to writing novels and is hard at work on a sequel to his well-regarded first book THE BOYS NEXT DOOR. Peter Blauner is a veteran journalist, TV writer (Law & Order, Blue Bloods), and an award-winning NY Times bestselling novelist. They will be using Dan’s latest project as an example of how mentor/friends can work together to develop narrative, structure, and the best practices to move a story from inside the writer’s head to the page.

They’ll discuss the important Big Questions for writers and the equally important Little Ones:

What is your project about? And why are you drawn to it?

Is it a novel, a memoir, a movie or a television show? What’s it like to switch between genres? Which skills are transferrable and which aren’t?

How can you tell if you have an Idea or a Story? And how do you turn your Idea into a story?

How do you determine Point of View? Who gets to tell your Story?

How and when do you figure out What Your Story Is Really About?

What will be Your Daily Practice? How will you do the work of telling your story and getting it from your head to the page?

What do you do when you run into a roadblock? How do you keep from getting demoralized?

How and when do you bring others into the process of telling your story?

And how do you protect your vision once others are involved?

Creating Story From the Inside Out

Thursday, Sept. 14th, 5pm PST/8pm EST

Join two of our Breckenridge Retreat mentors Alexa Junge and Ken LaZebnik for an hour of exploration into creating story “From the Inside Out.”

Registrants will receive a Zoom link prior to the class.

  • What makes a great story?

How does a writer get started?

What elements do I need to bring my story to life?

    How do I write it?

How can a writers room develop a common language to help each other as you create a story together?

This webinar will center on the foundational issues of story, delving into creating two rivers that run through every story – the narrative action that is visible, and the emotional unfolding of characters that flows beneath it. In this Webinar, you will learn techniques to develop and integrate these two strands in new ways that will connect you to your own voice and potential plus provide technical tools to help you move forward in exciting new ways.

Both Junge and LaZebnik are award-winning veteran playwrights and television writers, with hundreds of hours of produced television episodes between them. They are dedicated believers in the power of storytelling and excited to help writers of all kinds engage in work that is personally meaningful and exceptionally well-told.
